Men’s high jump shared gold medal, Brandon Starc fifth

Brandon Starc has finished fifth in the men’s high jump, recording the best jump ever by an Australian at an Olympic Games, as Mutaz Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi agreed to share the gold medal.

It’s the first time the gold medal has been shared in the men’s high jump, which has been a fixture at every modern Olympics since 1896.

The pair couldn’t be split through the final, making their first jump at every level up to 2.37m.

When they failed to clear 2.39, they were informed by officials that they could share the gold medal rather than have a jump-off for first, the pair shook hands, with Tamberi letting out a scream of joy as he embraced Barshim.

“It is amazing, man,” Barshim said. “To share it with Marco is an amazing feeling. It is a great feeling. I’m really happy.”

The win means Barshim completes the set of Olympic medals in the high jump, having won bronze in 2012 and silver in 2016.

For Tamberi it’s a remarkable comeback after a broken foot in 2016 nearly ended his career. He celebrated his gold medal by producing the cast he wore five years ago.

Maksim Nedasekau took the bronze medal for Belarus.

Starc was agonisingly close to a medal, finishing fifth after clearing 2.35m, which would have won him the bronze at Rio in 2016.

He missed his first attempt at 2.37m, then elected to pass on his next attempt at that height, choosing instead to attempt 2.39m. That was because he couldn’t improve his position even if he cleared 2.37m.

But he missed both attempts at 2.39m, which would have equalled the Olympic record.
